In the 1960’s a local trucking magnate built a North End residence in the style of Mid-Century Modern, a design philosophy pioneered by architects fleeing Germany during the Second World War and inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. This theme commonly incorporates flat geometric planes, ample windows, changes in elevation, and integration with nature. ? In the four season climate of New England, the designs of Mid-Century Modern homes differ from those in other areas of the country. New England versions have exterior cladding and roofs that are pitched, with wide overhangs to shelter windows and entryways from inclement weather. Trees provide natural cooling in the summer. North-facing windows are smaller here, to conserve heat. South-facing windows are large, letting in warming sunlight during the months when leaves are not on the trees. Natural materials, such as wood and stone, are extensively used for the both the interior and exterior. Stone floors absorb daytime solar heat and release it during nighttime hours. The fundamental character of this custom-designed home remains unchanged from the the original concept. Current owners bought the house from heirs in 2002, performing many renovations and updates, but more remains to be done to fully restore building and grounds to their original splendor.
